6 Health Benefits of Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate has recently been discovered to have a number of healthy benefits. While eating dark chocolate can lead to the health benefits described below, remember that chocolate is also high in fat. Use FitDay to keep track of your calories and nutrition as you work towards your weight loss goals.

1) Dark Chocolate is Good for Your Heart

Studies show that eating a small amount of dark chocolate two or three times each week can help lower your blood pressure. Dark chocolate improves blood flow and may help prevent the formation of blood clots. Eating dark chocolate may also prevent arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries).

2) Dark Chocolate is Good for Your Brain

Dark chocolate increases blood flow to the brain as well as to the heart, so it can help improve cognitive function. Dark chocolate also helps reduce your risk of stroke.
Dark chocolate also contains several chemical compounds that have a positive effect on your mood and cognitive health. Chocolate contains phenylethylamine (PEA), the same chemical your brain creates when you feel like you're falling in love. PEA encourages your brain to release endorphins, so eating dark chocolate will make you feel happier.
Dark chocolate also contains caffeine, a mild stimulant. However, dark chocolate contains much less caffeine than coffee. A 1.5 ounce bar of dark chocolate contains 27 mg of caffeine, compared to the 200 mg found in an eight ounce cup of coffee.

3) Dark Chocolate Helps Control Blood Sugar

Dark chocolate helps keep your blood vessels healthy and your circulation unimpaired to protect against type 2 diabetes. The flavonoids in dark chocolate also help reduce insulin resistance by helping your cells to function normally and regain the ability to use your body's insulin efficiently. Dark chocolate also has a low glycemic index, meaning it won't cause huge spikes in blood sugar levels.

4) Dark Chocolate is Full of Antioxidants

Dark chocolate is loaded with antioxidants. Antioxidants help free your body of free radicals, which cause oxidative damage to cells. Free radicals are implicated in the aging process and may be a cause of cancer, so eating antioxidant rich foods like dark chocolate can protect you from many types of cancer and slow the signs of aging.

5) Dark Chocolate Contains Theobromine

Dark chocolate contains theobromine, which has been shown to harden tooth enamel. That means that dark chocolate, unlike most other sweets, lowers your risk of getting cavities if you practice proper dental hygiene.
Theobromine is also a mild stimulant, though not as strong as caffeine. It can, however, help to suppress coughs.

6) Dark Chocolate is High in Vitamins and Minerals

Dark chocolate contains a number of vitamins and minerals that can support your health. Dark chocolate contains some of the following vitamins and minerals in high concentrations:
  • Potassium
  • Copper
  • Magnesium
  • Iron
The copper and potassium in dark chocolate help prevent against stroke and cardiovascular ailments. The iron in chocolate protects against iron deficiency anemia, and the magnesium in chocolate helps prevent type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

Walnuts: The Healing Nut

We have heard about the health benefits of walnuts for quite a few years now.
Every year it seems that there are more and more health benefits being discovered about this potent nut.

However, some people continue to avoid nuts, including walnuts, due to the higher calorie and fat content.
But, here I will tell you why you should never avoid the walnut (unless you are allergic, of course!).

Healing Properties of Walnuts

  • Reduced cardiovascular disease due to the potent form (alpha-tocopherol) of vitamin E found in walnuts. This is also a result of the heart healthy omega-3 fats called ALA (alpha-linolenic acid).

1 oz. serving of walnuts = 2.5 grams of ALA
This will get converted to EPA and DHA to use to reduce body inflammation and lower cholesterol.
  • Reduced blood pressure due to the excellent source of manganese and copper. Walnuts also contain potassium, magnesium, and calcium which may help to lower blood pressure.
  • Improved health with type 2 diabetes: By better managing heart disease risk factors, you can better manage diabetes.
  • Reduced cancer risk due to the rare antioxidants found only in walnuts (quinone juglone). Other antioxidants found in walnuts are rare, and only found in a few foods. Quinone juglone may be able to kill cancer cells while leaving healthy tissue unharmed.
  • Improved mood due to the higher concentration of omega-3 fats.
  • Improved hair and skin due to the healthy fats.
  • Increased male fertility: A recent study has shown increased sperm count (and less chromosomal abnormalities) in men that is due to the high concentration of PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acids).
  • Possible increased bone strength due to increased bone turnover.

But, What About the Calories?

Strong and reliable research has consistently proven that a diet that includes nuts daily will result in a longer, healthier life. It has been shown that those who eat nuts usually weigh less than those who avoid nuts altogether.
Notable reports from on a daily average, tree nut eaters take in 5 grams more fiber, 260 milligrams more potassium, 73 more milligrams of calcium, 95 more milligrams of magnesium, 3.7 milligrams more vitamin E, and 157 milligrams less sodium.
One Ounce Serving
Perhaps this is because nuts help to keep us full and satisfied and we unconsciously eat less of other foods. As few as 4 walnuts per day will help improve your health!
A 1 oz. (14 halves) serving of English walnuts contains:
  • 185 Calories
  • 18.5g Fat
  • 3.9g Carbs
  • 4.3g Protein
What do you think, do you eat walnuts or will you start adding them to your healthy diet?

Women may benefit more from eating oily fish than men

12 October 2012

New research, conducted at the University of Reading and funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), shows that oily fish is twice as healthy for women's hearts than men's and that in general fish oils could be better for our heart in more ways than previously thought by having more of a direct impact on the muscle cells that control the elasticity of our blood vessels.

Reading researchers introduced small amounts of fish oils to the meals of both men and women containing saturated fat. They found that elasticity was improved four-fold in women compared with two-fold in men. In fact the beneficial effect of the fish oil in women was as potent as that of drugs that are prescribed to people with poor blood vessels elasticity such as those with diabetes.

Professor Christine Williams, the University of Reading's Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation who led the study, said: "Studies examining women's heart health are much less common than those which study men, partly because the studies are harder to carry out in women due to the varying effects of hormones during the menstrual cycle. In addition, many believe men are the only ones to suffer from heart disease. However nearly 40,000 women die of coronary heart disease each year in the UK and we do not yet know whether all the diet recommendations which we currently advise are as effective for women as for men. The good news here is that current recommendations that we should all eat more oily fish appears to be more effective for women than men.

"As well as discovering the effect of fish oils is greater in women we also found that people with a gene variation that produces the protein eNOS, which helps to increase blood flow, also benefitted more. Our study showed that people who carry the rarer form of the protein, which is about 10% of the UK/world population, respond twice as well to fish oils, suggesting they would particularly benefit from additional oily fish intake.

"This research supports the view that the effects of diets vary, being more effective in certain genders and genotypes. Our study was very carefully designed to include equal numbers of men and women and also equal numbers of people with the two types of gene variants, so that the results are very unlikely to be due to chance. Although the responses varied, all the subjects in the study benefitted from taking fish oils with a meal. However, for women and those with the gene variant, the responses were very marked indeed, and when it comes to their diet, could give them considerable health benefits in the future."

Fish oil is known to increase the release of nitric oxide from the lining of the blood vessel wall which causes relaxation of the vessel and increases blood flow. However the researchers found that some of the relaxation effect on the blood vessel wall may be due to direct actions of the fish oil acting on the muscle cells themselves, rather than on the cells lining the blood vessel wall.
Professor Williams added: "This is an exciting discovery which gives us a new way of looking at how our diet affects the health of our blood vessels, and possibly more effective ways of improving heart health in the future."

The study was undertaken in the University of Reading's Hugh Sinclair Human Nutrition Group, which has an international reputation for its research into the relationship between diet and the risk of chronic disease such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, neurodegenerative disease and cancer.

Top 10 tips for a healthy diet

Guide to a healthy diet

Need to get back on track with your healthy eating? We have rounded up 10 of the best quick tips for a healthy diet that will instantly kick-start your daily diet to a more healthy state.
Breakfast porridge with bluberries and raspberries
1. Drink lots of water. Take a 1.5-litre (50oz) bottle of water to work with you, and try to finish it all by home time.
2. Eat five portions of fruit and vegetables every day. If you find this difficult, then remember that smoothies, juices and dried fruit all go toward your five-a-day quota.
3. Never skip breakfast, as it’s the most important meal of the day! Opt for something that will release energy slowly — porridge and a handful of blueberries are a great option!
4. Plan your meals for the week ahead. Write a shopping list and stick to it — and never shop when you're hungry, as this is a fatal error that inevitably leads you to stuffing your shopping trolley full of junk!
5. Keep a supply of healthy snacks to hand. Snacks can include fresh and dried fruit, wholesome cereal bars, rice cakes, low-fat fruit yoghurts and wholemeal pitta and hummus.
6. Remove all visible fat from food before you cook it. Take the skin off chicken and trim the white fat off any meat. Also, try to avoid eating too many processed meats such as sausages and burgers (the fat's not visible from the outside, but it's certainly there!).
7. Limit your intake of stimulants such as caffeine, alcohol and refined sugar.
8. Limit the number of times you eat out to once a week. Take your own packed lunch to work or choose (non-creamy) soup in the canteen.
9. Eat properly. Don't cut out food groups — such as carbohydrates — altogether in a bid to lose weight quickly. Your body needs balance, so make sure you eat properly. And don't do denial — you'll only end up cracking!
10. Only eat things you like the taste of. Find what works for you, and don't force yourself to eat things just because they're good for you.

The Truth About Raspberry Ketones

Recently, lots of you have been asking me about raspberry ketones and their ability to miraculously shrink fat. After all, it’s been getting a flurry of media attention. The dietary supplement is being touted as a number one fat loss miracle, but is that really true? Are raspberry ketones the newest weapon in the arsenal against excess fat? Can you really simply buy fat burning in a bottle?

What Is Raspberry Ketone?

Raspberry ketone is the compound that gives red raspberries their delicious smell. Scientists are also able to produce the raspberry ketone compound in a laboratory. The amount of raspberry ketones in supplements is significantly higher than eating raspberries by themselves.

How Raspberry Ketone Manufacturers Claim it Helps Weight Loss

hormone adiponectinAccording to manufacturers’ claims, raspberry ketones regulate the hormone adiponectin, which tends to be present at lower levels in people with obesity than those without it. Some studies show that increasing adiponectin levels may help treat insulin issues such as type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome by increasing insulin sensitivity. Insulin resistance is a key factor in obesity, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Raspberry ketones may also regulate norepinephrine, which can cause a slight rise in body temperature.

Nothing New about Raspberry Ketones

Raspberry ketone supplements have been around for years. In fact, they’ve been marketed internationally since the 1960s. Instead, it’s all the hype that’s new as manufacturers attempt to cash in on people’s willingness to try anything to lose weight.

Raspberry Ketone Studies

The claims about raspberry ketones seem to arise from two small-scale rodent studies. In the first study, researchers demonstrated the substance’s effectiveness in suppressing fat accumulation in male mice. In a second, which was conducted on a small sampling of mice, raspberry ketone appeared to prevent fat accumulation in mice fed a high fat diet. Thus far, no human studies exist showing the effectiveness of raspberry ketones for fat loss in humans, although anecdotal evidence seems to suggest it may be helpful in some cases.

How Do Rodent Studies Translate to Humans?

According to Johns Hopkins Medical, mouse and human genomes are about 85 percent the same, which is why mice are so often used as an initial base for studying human biology, genetics, and disease. This means that some findings in rodents will be consistent with findings in humans while others won’t. Ultimately, the best determination of how successful a supplement will be in humans can only come from carefully controlled, peer-reviewed, scientific human studies. Raspberry ketones have yet to meet this standard. The rodent studies are not backed up by solid human studies, nor has this unregulated substance been studied in humans to determine contraindications and potential side effects.

What about Anecdotal Evidence?

do raspberry ketones workWhile scientific studies are objective, anecdotal reports cannot be considered objective evidence because they are based on subjective human reporting. Such evidence can be affected by hype, expectations, and confirmation bias, rendering it not necessarily valid. Anecdotal evidence may be an excellent basis for forming a testable hypothesis, but only controlled scientific human study can determine a true correlation between raspberry ketones and weight loss.
No positive correlation can be established between raspberry ketones and human weight loss at this time.

Other Claims

In the wake of raspberry ketones’ recent media success, some manufacturers are adding other claims to their product, as well. One that I have seen quite a lot is that the raspberry ketones are anti-aging. While it is true they contain antioxidants that fight free radical damage, it’s a big stretch to call them an anti-aging miracle. If you want to fight aging, eat a superior plant based diet with natural antioxidants, and that doesn’t leave a lot of clogging waste in your body. Don’t just try to buy it solely with a pill.

Little Control

The FDA rates raspberry ketones as GRAS (generally recognized as safe); however, the agency has not tested nor does it support any of the weight loss claims made about raspberry ketone. Many manufacturers also include other ingredients in their supplements, such as norepinephrine (which can raise blood pressure), hoodia, capsaicin, caffeine, and other possible thermogenic (fat burning) ingredients. These ingredients may have a host of negative, and possibly dangerous, side effects.

Potential Dangers

raspberry ketone dangersNot included in the hype are the potential dangers of raspberry ketones. Because they regulate the body’s release of norepinephrine, it causes a spike in body temperature that may also lead to a temporary metabolic increase. Unfortunately, along with raising body temperature, norepinephrine can also raise blood pressure and heart rate. People with diabetes, heart conditions, high blood pressure, COPD, and asthma should all avoid raspberry ketones, which may aggravate the above conditions.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line on most miracle products touted for weight loss — including raspberry ketones — is that they are gimmicks. I don’t like gimmicks. While so many people would rather buy a supplement rather than change what they eat, there is no “miracle pill” for weight loss, and spending your money on such is, at best, a waste of money. At worst, these pills can have side effects and unregulated ingredients that can harm your health.
The best way to lose weight, keep it off, and be healthy is to eat a diet of whole, natural foods in moderation and get regular exercise. You don’t need to join an expensive gym – you can take a brisk 30 minute walk five days per week or develop a home yoga practice.
While rodent research may appear promising on raspberry ketones, it is far from conclusive. No human studies exist that can back up these claims. Don’t waste your money on a gimmick without proven effectiveness verified by large-scale controlled scientific human studies.

Beyond Weight Loss

weight lossWhile I understand the desire to lose weight, there is no miracle product that is going to make that happen for you. Losing weight should be part of an overall program for better, more vibrant health. Even if a miracle product could actually help you melt away pounds effortlessly, if you continue to eat processed foods, sugar, and chemicals, then you will see very little improvement in your health. The Beauty Detox System provides a program that focuses on your good health, with weight control and increased beauty as the inevitable result. Eating whole natural foods and living a healthy lifestyle is the best way to improve how you look and feel.
